Proposal to deprecate Incorporated and Unincorporated area static maps
editMany of the Incorporated and Unincorporated area static maps like File:San Diego County California Incorporated and Unincorporated areas San Diego Highlighted.svg were originally uploaded in 2007, and may not reflect the current borders as of now in 2025. I therefore propose that these static maps be deprecated in favor of using Template:Maplink and the like, and have those templates automatically import the border data from OpenStreetMap and other sources. In fact, some articles like San Jose, California, Sacramento, California, and Long Beach, California have already been converted. It'll be much easier than attempting to redo these thousands of staitc maps manually. Zzyzx11 (talk) 20:31, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- I don't agree. They provide an appropriate level of information, showing how the specific place fits in with the rest of the county and then the state. The interactive maps make things rather too complicated for casual readers. 2601:644:907E:A70:E489:BBF9:E45D:3FF (talk) 02:37, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- I'm curious why you think these interactive maps "make things rather too complicated for casual readers"? I have heard that other casual readers like the ability to zoom in and out, and see the specific details where the borders actually lie. You really cannot zoom in and out on something like File:LA County Incorporated Areas Walnut Park highlighted.svg and see what street(s) form Walnut Park's borders. That said, I'm only proposing this because, again, these static maps may not reflect the current borders that have changed since 2007 via annexation or de-annexation, it is much easier to automatically pull the border data than to manually update each static map, and several articles have already been converted to use variations of these interactive maps by various other editors besides myself -- as well as other cities outside California like New York City, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, and Dallas. Zzyzx11 (talk) 17:13, 4 February 2025 (UTC)
- At least NYC, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, and Texas display the location (within the state) without having to click on something. I am very unhappy with the display on San Jose, Sacramento, and Long Beach, as all that is displayed without clicking something is a close up of the city borders itself without showing where it's located. Also that can take too long to load depending on someone's internet speed. 2601:644:907E:A70:8127:4DFF:B5F3:A4C (talk) 06:55, 7 February 2025 (UTC)
- Another note. There are more recent versions than 2017, such as File:Santa Clara County California Incorporated and Unincorporated areas San Jose Highlighted 0668000.svg. 2601:644:907E:A70:8127:4DFF:B5F3:A4C (talk) 06:57, 7 February 2025 (UTC)
- So you are at least willing to compromise and use the style used on the NYC, Chicago, Houston, etc. pages? Those 2017 maps are eventually going to run into the same problem as the old 2007 maps. Zzyzx11 (talk) 14:55, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

- The case for nuking these old maps in favour of more up to date ones is clear, support. FOARP (talk) 10:50, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
Hi, anyone from LA?. Could you take photo of this monument?
editHi everyone. Are there anyone here from LA, from area of University Park or maybe students of the University of Southern California? Some time ago I wrote article about the Statue of Neil Armstrong (Los Angeles). But it seems there are no photos of it available on Commons. So I was wondering if maybe some student or stauff member (or even just LA resident), could maybe take photo of it? It's located at the campus of the University of Southern California, at the Epstein Family Plaza, near the intersection of Watt Way and Bloom Walk. Here's a photo from Google showing how it looks: 1. Who’s Who in the New Deal (California edition)
editFound a really great resource for those interested. Published and copyrighted 1940 but not renewed, full of photographic portraits and biographical information on a ton of period Democrats. I’ve already pulled a ton of great stuff from it. I’ll link it here PequodOnStationAtLZ (talk) 06:33, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
